Badlands Photography Workshops with Rikk Flohr. Spring Scenics — May 14–18, 2011.
Saturday night we start with an optional sunset at a pre-determined location in the park. The workshop goes until Wednesday morning when we finish with a final sunrise and free shooting till the light gets tough. The three full–days in the middle will be spent finding the very early sunrises and very late sunsets as we travel the park setting up our tripods at the best formations. Of course there will be wildlife along the way as we photograph the Black–tailed Prairie Dogs, Bighorn Sheep, American Bison, Mule and White–tailed Deer, There is always a chance at more exotic subjects such as the North American Porcupine, the American Badger, the Coyote, the Bobcat and the numerous other birds and beasts which populate the wilderness. This workshop has early mornings, late nights and warm weather. Don’t worry, we take a little downtime in the middle of the day to compensate.

For more information or to register, please go to: Badlands Photography Workshops with Rikk Flohr

Angela Andrist announces:
I hope you can come to the premiere of my film at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. (345 W. Kellogg Blvd. St. Paul, MN 55102) this Sunday, September 27, 2009.
Philippines 1968: My Mother’s Journey Home by Angela Andrist & Steve Date—Auditorium 1:00 – 2:00 pm.

In 1968, Angela turned three. It was the year her mother took her to family in the Philippines. We glimpse this fleeting prosperous time in the Philippines, in contrast to the happenings in the United States. Angela earned the “Emerging Filmmaker Award” in the 2008 short film competition. Steve also participated in the 2008 competition. He is a videographer for MinnPost and is working on a feature length documentary about Coalwood, West Virginia.

www.mnhs.org/people/1968/film-schedule.htm

If you get there by 12:30 pm, you should be able to make sure you get a good seat, since my film is the first in the group to show at 1:00 pm and is 10 minutes long, I don’t want you to miss it. Both my parents, featured in the film, will be attending. It should be a fun time.

Thanks for your on-going support in my artistic endeavors.

“West Photo is exhibiting prints from the Minneapolis Photographic Society”
Just a reminder that currently West Photo is exhibiting prints from the Minneapolis Photographic Society (MPS). For the entire month of August they will be displaying 1st and 2nd place “Print of the Year” winners in “Color” and “Monochrome” from Mary Olson (2 winners), Linda Staats, and Bob Hosker. The “Jeff Morgan Landscape Award” winner by Holly Kuchera is also on display.

Bring your friends, relatives, even neighbors along and let them see in person the high caliber of photography by our members.
Our helpful friend Kyle Krohn at West Photo graciously arranged for us to use their gallery (on the way back to their large selection of inkjet papers) for the month of August. So stop by, enjoy the prints, look around, and take a moment to thank the people at West for helping us to give recognition to the talents of our members and also helping to promote our club.

And remember, by regularly attending our tutorials and participating in our monthly salons, then next year it might be one of your images hanging in their gallery.

(West Photo is located at 21 University Ave NE, next to Surdyk’s, off of Hennepin Ave just across the river from downtown Minneapolis.)

Congratulations to Jeff Morgan of elmstudio.com. His 2006 image of the Stone Arch Bridge has been accepted into the Fine Arts Competition of the Minnesota State Fair. Acceptance is quite an accomplishment: out of more than 700 entries in the photography division, only 118 were accepted.

Jeff Morgan of elmstudio.com is the May winner and the 2006 Grand Prize winner in the REALVIZ Creative Panorama Competition his HDR image of the Stone Arch Bridge. www.dimagemaker.com

This ... image of the Stone Arch Bridge ... was taken from the deck of the Mill City Museum, shortly after sunset on 3/2/2006. [It] is a stitch of 3 images (each... made up of three images/exposures HDR (High Dynamic Range)) so 9 images in total .... taken on a Canon 5D digital Camera with about 24mm on the zoom lens.

The judges comments were: “Absolutely stunning. Great subject, great lighting and great stitching. A truly wonderful image.”

Congratulations Jeff!

Congratulations to Dick Kain: the June 2006 winner in the REALVIZ Creative Panorama Competition with an monochrome infrared photo of the Twin Cities area. www.dimagemaker.com

Here is a 360 degree panorama constructed in Photoshop using a filter I wrote that corrects distortions arising from the camera's geometry, and then merging the images by hand. This image was constructed from about 12 images taken with a Nikon D70S modified to take infrared images. The pictures were taken atop an old water tower, which does not permit one to use a fixed tripod; in fact, you have to walk around to the openings. All the images were taken hand-held. The skyline of Minneapolis, MN, is in the center.

The judges comments were: “A nicely done 360 taken under difficult circumstances that works beautifully. IR is a great medium for a different interpretation of reality.”

Fairy Bridge    ŠScott Moncrieff Scott Moncrieff – Minneapolis Star and Tribune – December 4, 2005

Scott Moncrieff’s photo Fairy Bridge can be found on page 2 of the Travel section of Sunday’s StarTribune. A woodland area on Scotland’s west coast is home to this somewhat–secret fairy bridge. Only locals in Glen Creran know about it, and it’s hard to find. He and his brother spent half a day last May searching. It’s up a steep path, all overgrown with ferns and bluebells, and there were waterfalls all around it. It was a great find!" Locals say the moss’covered bridge — about 2 feet wide and 6 to 8 feet across — is a Victorian folly.
